Ingredients

  • ¼ cup Nutella or any chocolate spread of your choice
  • 2 tablespoon Flour AP
  • 1 Egg

Instructions

  • In a microwave-safe tall mug (at least 12 oz or 350 ml), start by cracking the egg into the mug. Add the Nutella and flour.
  • Using a fork or small whisk, mix everything together until you have a smooth batter. Ensure that there are no lumps of flour remaining.
  • Place your mug in the microwave and cook on high for about 1 minute and 15 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds. The exact time may vary depending on your microwave's power, so keep an eye on it as it cooks.
  • Once done, carefully remove the mug from the microwave (it will be hot). The cake should look set but still slightly moist on top – that's when it's perfect.
  • Serve with more Nutella on top, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or enjoy it by itself!
  • Let it cool for a minute or two before digging in with a spoon directly from the mug or transferring it onto a plate if you prefer.

Notes

  • Measure your flour correctly! When measuring your flour, avoid scooping it with a measuring cup. Instead, stir the flour with a spoon to create as many air pockets as possible, and spoon it into your measuring cup. Finally, level it with a back of a knife.
  • Choose the right mug. Start with a microwave-safe mug that can hold at least 12 ounces. This ensures your cake has enough room to rise without overflowing.
  • Microwave in intervals. Cook your mug cake in short bursts of 30 seconds to prevent overcooking and ensure even rising.
  • Watch for rising. Keep an eye on your mug cake as it cooks; it should rise slightly above the rim when done but settle back down as it cools.
  • Test doneness carefully. Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake; if it comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs, it's ready.
  • Don’t overmix the batter, you don’t want to develop the gluten in the flour. This step ensures you have a moist cake and not a dense and dry cake.
  • Don't overcook the mug cake! If you will overcook your mug cake, it will turn out dry.
  • Ensure that you are using a heat-resistant mug so it won't break in the microwave!
