Yogurt is great for adding to overnight oats as a protein source, great in sauces, in marinades, in fillings for stuffed veggies, in soups and stews, etc.
Yogurt health benefits
Yogurt has many health benefits. It is a great source of protein, it's filled with probiotics, it is rich in calcium, vitamin B, magnesium, and vitamin D, it is known to potentially reduce inflammation, it is low in fat, and has many more health benefits.
Why you should freeze yogurt
You should freeze yogurt if you bought too many, or if you didn't use it but dont want to waste food. It has many uses that are very useful.
Uses for frozen yogurt
Frozen yogurt is great in many cases. Our favorite way to use frozen yogurt is to throw it in smoothies, to add it to stews like curry, or sauces. When you cook frozen yogurt, the texture changes are barely noticeable.
What happens when you freeze it?
The yogurt will change its consistency, it may separate after you thaw it. I recommend mixing the yogurt well after thawing it to give it its texture back.
It can turn a little bit grainy from freezing, but after you add it to cooking or smoothies, you won't be able to tell it was once frozen.
Freezing methods
Freeze yogurt in a cube tray
Step 1: Take an ice cube tray and pour the yogurt into the ice cube trays, not filling it all the way through, about ¾ full.
Step 2: Place the ice cube trays in the freezer. Yogurt takes a few hours to freeze completely. We usually keep it in the freezer overnight to prevent a mess.
Step 3: Remove the ice cube trays from the freezer and release the yogurt cubes from the ice cube trays.
Step 4: Transfer the cubes to a freezer-friendly ziplock bag or an airtight freezer-friendly container. Squeeze out as much air as you can to save space in the fridge.
Step 5: Label the ziplock bag or the container if needed and freeze for up to 2 months.
Freeze yogurt in a container
Step 1: Prepare an airtight freezer-friendly container and pour the yogurt into the container, filling it not all the way through.
Yogurt contains mostly water, and water expands in the freezer, so you will need to leave some space in the container.
Step 2: Close the container tightly and make sure that it is well sealed. Only an airtight container will work for this.
It prevents the yogurt from absorbing odors from surrounding foods which can lead to the milk spoiling faster.
Step 3: Label the container if needed (with the title yogurt and the quantity) and place the container in the freezer for up to 2 months.
How to thaw yogurt
In the fridge
This is the best way to thaw frozen yogurt. Yogurt can be thawed in the fridge by placing it in the fridge overnight.
In lukewarm water
The second way to thaw yogurt is to pour some lukewarm water into a bowl and place the frozen yogurt (in a container or a ziplock bag) to speed out the thawing process. This can take 2-3 hours to thaw.
Notice that you don't use hot water or warm water. Only lukewarm water will work for this.
On stovetop
The third way to defrost yogurt is also the fastest: release the yogurt from the container or ice cube trays, and warm it up in a small saucepan oven with medium heat.
Some people like this method the best because you can also thicken the yogurt and make it more creamy by cooking it for longer.
Expert Tips
After you defrost the yogurt, make sure that you give it a quick blend in a blender or in a food processor to fix its texture.
Faq's
To fix separated thawed yogurt you will need to simply blend the yogurt in a blender for about 30 seconds until the texture of the milk is fixed. If you don't have a blender, you can use a food processor as well.
After you thaw your yogurt, it will last fresh for about 3 days. Fresh yogurt usually stay fresh for 7-14 days, so if you freeze it, make sure that the expiration date is near.
Yogurt will change its texture when freezing, but this issue can be fixed very easily by blending it in a food processor or in a blender for about 30 seconds.
We suggest freezing yogurt before it goes bad. If you have yogurt in the fridge for a few days, and you probably won't use it in the next few days, we suggest freezing it then.
Yes! All the tips work great for both regular yogurt and greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is a bit thicker than regular yogurt but it works great as well.
