Ingredients
Before you start to make this recipe, measure and prepare your ingredients so the cooking process will go smoothly and easily.
Full measurements are in the recipe card below.
Potatoes– for this recipe, we like to use Yukon Gold potatoes, russet potatoes, or red potatoes, but any potato kind will work great for this recipe!
Paprika– use your favorite brand of paprika. You can use sweet paprika or smoked paprika.
Garlic powder- use your favorite brand of garlic powder. You can use onion powder instead.
Olive oil- use extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor. If you don't want to use olive oil, you can use avocado oil, canola oil, or vegetable oil!
Kosher salt– we used kosher salt in this recipe. You can use sea salt or flakey salt as well.
Black pepper- use ground black pepper.
Instructions
Wash and cut the potatoes into ½-inch pieces and dry them well using a towel or paper towel.
Transfer the potatoes to a large mixing bowl, and add the olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and kosher salt.
Mix well until the potatoes are covered with the seasoning. Brush the air fryer basket with a tablespoon of olive oil.
Place the potatoes into the air fryer and cook for 15-18 minutes at 200c (400f). Shaking the basket every 5 minutes.
Serve the home fries as a side dish, savory breakfast, or as a snack with ketchup, ranch, or your favorite dressing.
Expert Tips
- Ensure that you cut your potatoes into even pieces so they will bake evenly. Make sure that every piece of potato is about the same thickness and length.
- Dip these in your favorite dressing like ketchup, mayonnaise, boom boom sauce, bang bang sauce, ranch, etc.
- Soak your potatoes in cold water before baking them. This step makes them crispier. It reduces the amount of starch which makes them crispy and delish!
- Pat the potatoes completely dry before adding oil and seasonings. Moisture is the enemy of crispy fries.
- Toss the potatoes in just a small amount of oil - 1-2 teaspoons is usually enough. Too much oil can make them soggy.
- Make sure to dry out the potatoes with paper towels or a towel to make them crispy.
- Shake or toss the fries halfway through cooking for maximum crispness.
- Cut the potatoes evenly. Aim for ½-inch thick fry-shaped pieces so they cook at the same rate.
- I highly suggest not overcrowding the air fryer basket, cook it in batches to make them cook properly.
Faq's
The best potatoes for making fries are Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes.
Russets have a high starch content which makes them crispy when fried or baked, while Yukon Golds have a creamy texture that holds up well to frying or baking.
Avoid watery, low-starch potatoes which will result in soggy fries.
My biggest tip to get crispy potatoes in the air fryer is to pat them dry with paper towels or a clean dry towel after cutting them and before adding the seasoning.
I didn't soak the potatoes in this recipe. This recipe is super easy and straightforward and will take you no time to prep. If you would like to soak the potatoes, feel free to do so, but make sure you pat them dry.
Storing
If you have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheating
To reheat these, I recommend preheating an oven or toaster oven to its highest temperature (250c, 482f) and heating it for about 10 minutes or until the potatoes are crispy again.
Freezing
Let the home fries cool to room temperature, then place them in the freezer and stored them in an airtight freezer-friendly container for up to 2 months.
When ready to use, place the potatoes in the fridge overnight to defrost, or thaw it at room temperature for a few hours. Reheat in the oven at 250c (482f) for 5-10 minutes, or until crispy.
Substitutions
Potatoes- you can substitute the potatoes with different kinds of vegetables like zucchini, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. Read more on my potato substitute post.
Variations
Spicy- if you like your potatoes a little spicy (or a lot), you can add ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper or ½ teaspoon of chili flakes.
Everything bagel- if you are obsessed with everything bagel seasoning like us, you should try seasoning your potatoes with everything bagel seasoning.
Parmesan-herb- sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese and chopped fresh herbs like rosemary, thyme, or parsley over the fries for a savory, aromatic twist.
Spicy- for a little heat, coat the wedges in a mixture of chili powder, cumin, and cayenne pepper before air frying.
Garlic-parsley- mince fresh garlic and parsley, then toss with the fries post-cooking for a fragrant, garlicky flavor.
Chili-lime- sprinkle a blend of chili powder, cumin, and lime zest over the fries for a zesty, south-of-the-border taste.
Truffle parmesan- finish the fries with a drizzle of truffle oil and a generous grating of Parmesan cheese for an elevated, restaurant-worthy dish.
Natural- if you like the natural flavor of potatoes, skip the spices, and add coat the potatoes with oil, salt, and black pepper for a natural potato flavor.
Serving tips
Serve it next to a protein- serve home fries alongside burgers, hot dogs, or grilled chicken for a satisfying meal.
Breakfast delight- top home fries with scrambled eggs, bacon, and cheese for a hearty breakfast.
Loaded fries- smother the fries in melted cheese, bacon bits, sour cream, and chives for a decadent treat.
Taco-inspired- use the home fries as a base for taco toppings like ground beef, salsa, guacamole, and shredded cheese.
Poutine-style- drizzle the fries with brown gravy and top with squeaky cheese curds for a poutine-inspired dish.
Dipping delight- serve the home fries with dipping sauces like ranch, barbecue, or garlic aioli on the side.
