Ingredients
Before you start to make this recipe, measure and prepare your ingredients so the cooking process will go smoothly and easily.
Flour– we used all-purpose flour for this recipe, self-rising flour, and cake flour will work great as well.
Granulated sugar– we like to use granulated sugar, the most common sugar in baking.  Caster sugar will work great as well.
Dutch cocoa powder– we like to use Dutch-process cocoa powder for our chocolate cake because we like the deep and rich chocolate taste, but the cocoa powder will work!
Baking powder- to allow the cake to rise.
Pinch of salt- for flavor.
Vanilla extract– vanilla extract Is an essential ingredient for chocolate cake.
Milk– gives the cake extra moisture. We used whole milk.
Vegetable oil – we used vegetable oil for this recipe. canola oil will work great for this recipe.
Nutella- you will need a few teaspoons of Nutella for this recipe. We like using Nutella for this recipe, but if you don’t like Nutella or are allergic to one of the ingredients, you can use any kind of chocolate hazelnut spread.
Powder sugar (optional) - for decoration.

Instructions
In a large mug or a small bowl, mix together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt.

Add the wet ingredients: milk, oil, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Transfer the batter into a mug. (if you’re using a small mixing bowl)
Place 1-2 teaspoons of Nutella spread on top of the batter.

Place the mug in the microwave and microwave for 1 minute and 20 seconds.
Place another teaspoon of Nutella on top and dust with powder sugar.
Serve the mug cake hot and enjoy!

Expert tips
- Measure your flour correctly! When measuring your flour, avoid scooping it with a measuring cup. Instead, stir the flour with a spoon to create as many air pockets as possible, and spoon it into your measuring cup. Finally, level it with a back of a knife.
- Don’t overmix the batter, you don’t want to develop the gluten in the flour. This step ensures you have a moist cake and not a dense and dry cake.
- Don't overcook the mug cake! If you will overcook your mug cake, it will turn out dry.
