Ingredients
Before you start to make this recipe, measure and prepare your ingredients so the cooking process will go smoothly and easily.
Full measurements are in the recipe card below.
Frozen puff pastry- we use store-bought frozen puff pastry, we find it the easiest and fastest to work with. If you want to use a homemade puff pastry, that will work great as well.
Nutella- you will need ¾ cup of Nutella for this recipe. We like using Nutella for this recipe, but if you don’t like Nutella or are allergic to one of the ingredients, you can use any kind of chocolate hazelnut spread.
Egg- you will need an egg for the egg wash. I like adding a tablespoon of cream or milk to the egg wash.
Powder sugar (optional)- you will need powdered sugar to sprinkle over the pastry. you don’t have to buy powdered sugar, you can simply make it at home by blending granulated sugar in a blender or food processor.
Instructions
Preheat an oven to 200c (400f), and let your puff pastry thaw for about 2 hours (before preheating the oven) or until it's easy to work with.
Unfold two sheets of puff pastry and place one of them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
Spread the Nutella or spread of your choice evenly with a spatula or with a butter knife.

Lay the other puff pastry on top of the Nutella. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut the outline of a Christmas tree (as seen in the video or images).

Use a star cookie cutter to cut off 2-3 stars from the scraps. Set the starts aside.
Cut 1-inch strips on the sides of the Christmas tree. Twist each strip away from you to create a beautiful design.

Place a star on the top of the tree for a finished Christmas tree.

Mix 1 egg with 1 tablespoon of milk or heavy cream and brush the tree with the egg wash.
Bake in a 200c (400f) preheated oven for 20-30 minutes or until it's golden brown. Take a look at the tree after 20 minutes to make sure it doesn't burn.

Sprinkle powdered sugar on top of the Christmas tree for a snowy look. Serve hot and enjoy!

Expert Tips
- Thaw the puff pastry in advance. An hour or two before making this, take the frozen puff pastry from the freezer and let it thaw at room temperature until it's defrosted.
- Keep an eye on the top of the pie when it's baking! It is easy to burn.
- Make this your own by adding your favorite flavors and add-ins. Add chopped nuts, and different spreads that you like, and drizzle it with a simple glaze, chocolate syrup, etc.
- Make this tree savory by swapping the Nutella with savory fillings like different cheeses, pesto, savory spreads, dried tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, etc.
- If you live in a cold climate, microwave the Nutella for 20-30 seconds to make it more spreadable.

Faq's
This pastry will last for up to 3 days stored at room temperature. I like eating it fresh as it's pulled out of the oven, but it's okay to store it for a few days in an airtight container.
Place the puff pastry at room temperature for 2-3 hours until it's thawed or place it in the fridge overnight.
Instead of throwing the excess cut-off parts of the puff pastry, twist them and bake them next to the Christmas tree.
Yes! If you love making your puff pastry, use it! If it is frozen, make sure that you thaw it an hour or two before making this recipe.

Storing
I doubt that you will have leftovers, but if you do, you can store these at room temperature sealed with plastic wrap or foil, and store these for up to 3 days.
Reheating
Reheat these in a toaster oven or regular oven at 150c(300f) for about 5 minutes (keep an eye so they won't burn) until they are nice and crispy.
Freezing
Freeze this after it's cooled completely in an airtight freezer-friendly container for up to 2 months.
Substitutions
Puff pastry- you can swap the store-bought puff pastry and use a homemade puff pastry if needed!
Nutella- if you don't consume Nutella, you can use your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread for this.
Gluten-free- you can make this recipe gluten-free by swapping the puff pastry with gluten-free puff pastry. You can make homemade ones or use store-bought!

Variations
You can make this tree your own by adding different flavors to it.
Nuts- add chopped nuts on top of the Nutella for an added crunch. You can use almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, and pecans! I like toasting them first for a better flavor.
Glaze- top these with a simple glaze instead of powdered sugar.
Spread- you can swap the Nutella with your favorite spread like dulce de leche, chocolate spread, peanut butter, homemade chocolate filling as I used in this chocolate babka, etc.
Savory- you can skip the sweet filling and fill this with savory filling like pizza filling (tomato sauce, cheese, pepperoni), pesto and cheese, spinach and cheese mixture, etc. You can be creative and make this your own!
